Patience and Determination

Only bad things happen quickly… Virtually all the happiness-producing processes in our lives take time, usually a long time: learning new things, changing old behaviors, building satisfying relationships, raising children. This is why patience and determination are among life’s primary virtues • Gordon Livingston

patience and determination

Life is a process that unfolds gradually as we move through time and space. And yet, in today’s fast-paced world we expect things to happen quickly. Patience is the forgotten virtue. We give up too easily if things do not unfold the way we imagined and we are seldom motivated to persevere.

But even if we are strongly determined to achieve our dreams and work patiently until our dreams come true, we are not patient enough to really savor the fruits of our labor. Worse, we may feel deeply unsatisfied or disappointed even if we get what we wanted.

The unfolding emptiness is terrifying and had to be filled up. So, as soon as we get what we wanted, we are already on the move chasing after another dream or another experience.

Instant gratification is like a disease that makes us blind not only to the real world out there, but also to the mystery of human existence as such. How can anyone with such an affliction expect to have a fulfilled life or be genuinely happy?

Regrets usually come when it is already too late to start all over.
